I don’t necessarily agree with Mr. Gravel, but I really enjoyed this video.

I read about this on The Bad Plus’ blog, Do The Math. I don’t take credit for discovering it OR being the first, just the next.

A buddy of mine works in the Chicago and Lake area of Minneapolis. Not the greatest neighborhood in the city, but it has its merits. He and his boss were discussing the story of the Wisconsin man who was put on trial for having sex with a dead deer found on the side of the road, when one the store’s patrons (whom we shall call Phil) nonchalantly said, “when I was in Louisiana, I used to get tons of cow pussy.” He went on to tell more details about it, including stories of a dairy barn and 26 cows.
Later in the week, the boss was retelling the story to another patron (whom we shall call Anne) who grew up in the south and she said that having sex with horses and cows was very common and acceptable in the “good old days.” The only taboo is having sex with sheep. Why might you ask is it OK to have sex with horses and cows, but not sheep? Because the sheep can get pregnant!
In fact, my friend asked Phil about the cow versus sheep thing and he confirmed the common belief that sex with cows is OK but sheep are off limits. He said that you end up with a half sheep/half human baby. He said that if you do have sex with a sheep, you have to kill it right quick. Another interesting point is that there are extra-tough sodomy laws directed at sheep sex versus cow sex. Now you know, be careful.

I ended up having many close interactions with Guinea Fowl throughout my trip, mainly when sleeping by the pool. Most of the time I did not have my camera with me, but I did get a few shots. The shots were at range, so they are not of the greatest quality. Aren’t they lovable?
Joe made Guinea Fowl stew which was quite good and simple. What was amazing is that he added no water. He simply sauteed 2 onions in oil and then added the cut up guinea fowl, covered and cooked under medium heat. Then he added a few veggies that he like, in this case peppers (which added great flavor). Salt, pepper, and paprika and a great simple stew was born, with a surprising amount of wonderfully flavored liquid.

Vacationing in rural Dominican Republic is an adventure to say the least. We are staying at a nice place with some friends, but it takes a bit to get used to all the facilities in the small towns and such. For instance, if you go to the beach, they have restaurant shacks that basically all serve the same thing. Then when you arrive, men come up to you and ask if you need a beach chair, or an umbrella, or a drink. Once you agree to get something with one, he is around you for the whole time. Sort of your personally assistant. He does not take money until the end, so it makes you a bit nervous that there might be a confrontation at the end.
Another interesting tidbit is that they are trying to aggressively deal with the problem of drunk driving. The legal limit if you drive a taxi or public transport vehicle is 0.15. The legal limit for a standard driver is 0.25. From Slarty’s perspective, I am glad that they are protecting the public.
I have wanted to see a guinea fowl for as long as I can remember. The day we arrived, our hosts mentioned that we will hear them in the morning. And sure enough, there are 4 or 5 of them outside trailing along. Weird looking birds – I will try to get a photo of one for the site, perhaps I could add it to my barnyard collection. To top it all off, we are having guinea fowl stew for dinner tonight! A neighbor that we were drinking with last night is making it. This French-Canadian neighbor last night want to look up on my computer stories about the discovery of the hexagonal poles of Saturn(I have known a few Poles in my life and they are not hexagonal for sure). His son had alerted him to the story and he was concerned that there was some “weird shit going on.” A discussion pursued about whether space aliens would be aggressive by nature. Good discussion points – perhaps we should do some pre-emptive strikes!

Had a small layover in Miami, got a chance to view the caged animals. These fine specimens were trying to escape the pure air of the airport, when the got locked in a display cage. The picture does not do the scene justice.
In all seriousness, Miami is a very large and very boring airport to have a layover in. We flew in at the D concourse and the gate agent told us it would be better to wait until closer to our departure time to go to the departure gate on the A concourse. She also suggested that the food was better at the food court on the D concourse. After wandering about looking for a sit down restaurant/bar, we gave in and ate at the food court. It was not good.
Low and behold, when we finally go to the departure gate on the A concourse, there is a swanky little bar right next to it. We were bamboozled! The D concourse folks must work on commission.
So far, the vacation is going well. Been on the beach quite a bit. Saw an attractive topless woman holding a stringer of fish and learned of a pleasant Dominican Drink called Mamajuana. I will bring the raw materials back to the states to share with the local crew,

I was at a stop light this morning and the Led Zeppelin song Ramble On came on. If you are familiar with the tune, it starts with a quiet syncopated rhythm. What blew me away was listening to the song with my turn signal on. Try it sometime. Not too loud because you need to clearly hear the turn signal.

When The Bad Plus album Prog comes out on May 8th. Buy it. It is good.

I am leaving early Saturday for the Dominican Republic, which is exciting on many levels. One reason I am excited about it is that the Dominican Republic is a cigar smoker’s paradise. Many officianados now consider the Dominican Republic to be superior to Cuba in the quality and consistency of their product. I have never really been a huge fan of cigars from Cuba, but it is probably just because I am not enough of a connoisseur.
Here is a short list of manufacturers in the Dominican Republic
Arturo Fuente
La Aurora
León Jimenes
Carbonell
Cojimar
Juan Clemente
Montecristo
Romeo y Julieta
I am sure to enjoy a few on the beach and bring back a few to share. If you have any suggestions, let me know!
