American Idol on its way out or is pop country a waste of sound waves?

American Idol this week was horrible. From beginning to end, the singers and song choices were uninspired and down right boring. The show has left me not being excited to watch it all. This is a good thing, watching too much of this show definitely erodes my music “street cred.”

A few comments on specific performances that bugged me: Taylor Hicks has lost all of his quirkiness, forcing him to compete with the other idols purely on good looks and talent. I fear he will soon be going the way of Mandisa (and Jesus for that matter) before too long. Elliot Yamin really bugged me this week(every week?). He is like a soprano in a hillbilly’s body. When he sings he adds an unnatural warbling vibrato to any note longer than an eighth note. This week, Kenny Rogers gave Elliot the advice to not do all the amateurish, “hey look at me I can sing,” false vibrato shit. Did Elliot listen? No. So America focused in on his weird ass mouth vibratoing. Not cool. Mandisa, who we learned last night got booted, sang a Shania Twain song. Essentially she sang it almost identically to the radio version, which in my opinion makes us compare her version to that one. Let me see here, Mandisa or Shania….

I find it amazing that not one Idol choose a classic country song. Why not sing Patsy, Kenny Rogers, or Hank Williams? Maybe that would be going too far over the Simon’s invisible line? In the end I think it will be Chris Daughtry and Katharine McPhee. I just hope that they don’t survive because the have sold out to the pop machine
